Technology and Equipment for Sulphur-Refinement of Combustion Gases in Accordance with the European Norms at the Exhibition EcoTech 2014

Desulphurization at industrial enterprises of Kazakhstan is still a novelty, but it will soon become a necessity according to new standards of "Green Economy" under the Presidential Decree No. 577 dated 30.05.2013.

Arcon Industries Kazakhstan LLC represents technologies and equipment for desulfurization (wet and semi-dry) for power plants (heat stations, thermal power-stations) and non-ferrous and ferrous metallurgy made by AMK Krakow SA (hereinafter referred to as AMK).

Capacity and quality of installations made by AMK for desulphurization allow processing any amount and any type of gas which would be cleaned up to the European standards.

Let's consider the method of semi-dry desulfurization. Combustion gases are fed into the absorber, where cooling and reaction with milk of lime are taking place, which is supplied as a droplet shape (a droplet size of 40 microns), by a rapidly rotating injector (10000 rev/min). Reacting heavy particles gravitate to the bottom of the absorber and are taken away through gateways and volatile elements are brought to bag filters (8 m of length), where the final purification takes place.

The main points on which we would like to draw your attention are that the technology:

  1. has high efficiency of SO2 absorption – a rapidly rotating injector generates fine-dispersed drips ("mist") at the size of 40 microns of lime milk and thereby forms a large contact surface for the chemical reaction of lime and the combustion gases and hence gives the high efficiency of the chemical reaction that is desulphurization, till 99%;
  2. technology flexibility – the installation functions effectively and cleans the combustion gases, as in the nominal and small loads of boilers up to 20%. Thus, in the process of sorbent recirculation with small amounts of combustion gases, the electricity consumption is considerably reduced (pumps).
  3. Low volume of re-circulating sorbent – in the process of clearing the amount of re-circulating sorbent is up to 20 times smaller than in the CFB and NID technologies and it allows making quick start of the installation in the event of failure/malfunction.
  4. Local content: By mounting, up to 60% of the equipment will be manufactured and purchased in Kazakhstan, and it gives a significant part of local content in the project, and yet it is the amount of work, orders, jobs and taxes.
  5. Economics: Cost of equipment is very competitive with the West European one by high quality of sulphur cleaning. Given the fact that such projects are highly capital-intensive, there is a possibility to save the state budget;
  6. AMK is an engineering company and developer of the devices in its installation. It works in collaboration with the Scientific Research Institute in Poland: Institute of Non-Ferrous Metals in Gliwice, Krakow Polytechnic Institute, Wrocław University of Technology.
  7. Modularity of installations. The company has huge experience of installing its equipment in enterprises where desulphurization was not provided and space is limited.

Example: A good example of reliability and quality of combustion gas cleaning in heat stations is the present image. The heat station burns coal and installations for desulphurization from AMK are blue-collared, but behind the fence there is a residential sector and a football field. This picture was taken in Poland, which is a member of the European Union and must comply with the rules on sulphur emissions into the atmosphere.

Company AMK has extensive experience and a list of references of existing enterprises with its installations in Europe, where environmental legislation is very strict.

To check the quality of the installation functioning of desulphurization is not like to check the quality of the TV on the picture after it is turned on. The installation is to be examined in work at the existing heat stations, thermal power-stations and metallurgical works. Operating enterprises in the list of references may be visited by the representatives of the Exploitation, Customers and Designers at any time.
